Derek McCabe Nuffield Scholar 2009 Profile Picture

Derek is a Civil Engineer from Co Cavan, who was reared on a dairy farm. He purchased land and built up a beef fattening business. He also breeds Irish Draught horses. Subsequently he acquired additional parcels of land and built up a forestry enterprise. He and his wife also run a self-catering enterprise with two high quality houses. He is MD of Sheelin & McCabe, which provides architectural, engineering and planning services.

He is very active in his local community, and was chair of the Cavan-Monaghan Rural Development Co-op (LEADER). He is active in a number of other local community bodies. He is also a Board member of Extern, a social justice charity supporting children, young people and families.

His study topic was ‘Carbon Sequestration in Forestry’, and he travelled to the UK, France, Italy, and United Arab Emirates in conducting this study.
