Joe Burke is Beef and Livestock Sector Manager with Bord Bia, the Irish Food Board, which is responsible for market development, promotion and market information for Ireland’s agri-food industry.

He is also closely involved in the family beef farm in Co. Limerick, finishing around 200 cattle per year. These are mainly purchased as weanlings and slaughtered as steers at around 24 months of age.

Joe graduated with a first class honours degree in Agricultural Science from University College Dublin in 2002, and has previously worked as a beef nutrition advisor and in management in the beef processing industry.
Joe’s study topic on “Enabling Ireland to become the leading producer of quality beef from the dairy herd” is of particular interest because Ireland’s national dairy herd was expanding rapidly after the end of milk quotas. Joe studied best-practice internationally in rearing, production, processing and marketing of beef from the dairy herd. He visited New Zealand and Australia, as well as the UK and Continental Europe and Russia on his study topic.

Maeve is a 2015 Scholar, and deferred her GFP and other travel for a year, and completed her Nuffield programme with the 2016 scholars.
Maeve attained a BSc in Land Management Agriculture from Waterford Institute of Technology in 2012. She previously spent 18 months working on a 1,300 cow dairy farm in New Zealand. Her experience in New Zealand gave rise to the genesis of her solution, the ‘Inspect 4 turn over crate’.

Kevin is the youngest of 11 children. Originally from Claremorris, Co. Mayo. He is a new entrant into dairy farming since 2013 after leasing a farm on a long-term lease in Caherlistrane, Co. Galway. Having milked 72 cows on 36Ha in 2013, Kevin has grown his business to 320 cows and farming 125 Ha in 2018.

While trying to obtain finance for his start-up in 2013 Kevin encountered major barriers as he had no collateral and was very inexperienced. He was declined finance nine times before eventually obtaining a sanction on the tenth attempt. It was because of his difficulty in obtaining funding that he chose his topic, ‘Access To Finance, The Biggest Challenge In Converting The Intangible Into Tangible’.

As part of his scholarship Kevin travelled to USA, UK, France, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Belgium, Kenya and South Africa.
