Seamus O’Mahony married to Ruth with two children, live in Kilbrittain, in West Cork was awarded the 2013 Nuffield Scholarship sponsored by the Golden Jubilee Trust. Seamus works as Business Development Manager with Barryroe Co-operative Limited. Seamus grew up as part of a dairy and agricultural contracting family business. His study topic is “Do smaller multi-purpose farmer owned Co-ops in Ireland have a Future?” He believes smaller Co-ops need to reinvent existing input supply chains to survive and prosper post 2015 when EU milk quotas are abolished. Barryroe Co-op have been paying among the highest milk prices in Ireland for many years through a federated milk processing structure at Carbery Milk Products www.carbery.ie Carbery itself is owned and operated by four neighbouring co-ops who operate independently otherwise in all other aspects including the supply of farmer inputs. Seamus will to travel to Canada, Denmark, Finland, South America and New Zealand to study efficiency in farmer co-op input supply chains for member benefit. Ultimately he aims to identify and recommend new input supply chain structures for sustainable co-operation for member benefit especially within the four West Cork Co-ops along the Carbery model for milk processing.

Alo Mohan, married to Yvonne with three sons, is from Redhills in Co Cavan was awarded the FBD Trust Nuffield Scholarship for 2013. Alo’s study topic was “Thinking Different – Encouraging the Transfer of Knowledge in the Poultry Sector”. Alo’s farm consists of a 140,000 broiler poultry unit, raising 7.5 crops/year; a beef farm with some sheep. At present he does over a million chickens a year on one unit. On that unit he is studying the effects of removing CO2 from housing through indirect heating. Alo’s aim is to have greater farmer involvement in research and policy decisions which he believes is an untapped resource. He hopes to gain knowledge and ideas from other countries so as to implement affordable research and development in smaller countries like Ireland which do not have research in poultry or other small sectors. This leaves farmers and different departments within government very isolated when directives are enforced from Europe. Alo is currently receiving funding from the European Union for the purchase of equipment for research. He hopes to visit the Netherlands, the United States and Canada in the pursuit of knowledge associated with his topic. He was Chairman of the IFA Poultry Committee in Ireland.

Connacht Gold Co-op are a Dairy Co-op based in the West of Ireland and are supporting Nuffield Ireland for the first time because there are so few Nuffield scholars in the West of Ireland. Sean’s topic for study is “Farm Fragmentation in Irish Dairying – Overcoming and Adapting to it”. Sean plans to focus in on the areas of Robotics in a grass based scenario, computerised and automated management systems and low cost grass focused technologies. He will also look at how people and staff can utilise the most modern and efficient research that will help in overcoming the management of fragmented holdings. Sean has an honours degree in business studies from GMIT, Galway. He currently farms in north Mayo running 90 cow spring calving dairy farm, on 50 hectares. He also sends his young stock for contract rearing, and intends to expand up to 150 cows post 2015.

Eddie Kehoe, from Wexford, received the 2013 Nuffield Scholarship supported by Meat Industry Ireland. Eddie studied “Maximising the utilisation of grazed grass in beef production to meet future market demands”. Currently Eddie is managing his 52 hectare family farm in Monamolin, producing prime lambs from a spring lambing flock and beef cattle from a 90 cow suckler herd. Recognising the critical importance of the quality and quantity of grass in beef and sheep farming, with the aim of maximising output at minimum cost has led Eddie to his Nuffield research topic. He will use his scholarship to investigate how farmers in other parts of the world manage and optimise the production and utilisation of grass, a key input in livestock farming. He will also investigate the change in future market demands in order to ensure Irish farmers are producing the required stock to meet these demands. “Grass is a key input in beef farming and so achieving the optimum quantity and quality is crucial in order to maintain profit margins. As a result he will investigate grassland management in countries such as New Zealand and future beef market demands in the UK”.
It is inspiring to work with an organisation that gives people an opportunity to build their leadership capacity through their exposure to global agriculture and build their networks around the world.

I have learned a lot from them, and while daunting, it is exciting to have the opportunity to build on what they have achieved.”
