Friday 14th November 2024
Mount Wolseley Hotel, Tullow, Co. Carlow

The theme of our 2024 conference describes the ambition of our Scholars and our Scholarship programme: it is no less than helping to shape agriculture to meet its multiplicity of missions and challenges.

Our six 2023 Scholars – Bryan Daniels, Margaret Edgill, David Fennelly, Thomas Murray, Liagh Whelehan and Gillian Willis – researched globally with the support of the Nuffield programme topics of direct and immediate relevance to Irish agriculture, each with a motivation to inform policy and practice to positively impact – shape – Irish agriculture.

The Scholars reported on subjects as diverse as optimising our grassland economic and environmental performance through clover and Nitrate surplus management; future proofing our farms from a people-management perspective; developing an agritourism policy that showcases our artisan food production; improving the sustainability of plant production in controlled environments; and the future for potato and vegetable production in the face of consumer trends, market and environmental challenges. Their presentations can be viewed below.

Our fantastic guest speaker, former MD of Glanbia Siobhán Talbot, in a fireside chat with 2019 Nuffield Scholar Karina Pierce, gave us candid insights into the professional challenges of leading her team and her diverse stakeholders in a complex organisation like Glanbia through an evolution towards two distinct organisations (Glanbia Plc and Tirlán Co-ops). She also very honestly approached the personal challenges of leadership, trying to balance work and family life, dealing with health challenges, and more.

We met our newly recruited 2025 Scholars Marina Conway, Majella McCafferty, Zoe McKay and Seamus McMenamin, and heard an update from our 2024 Scholars Nick Cotter, Molly Garvey, Niall Hurson, John Keane and Michael Martin who are halfway through their Nuffield Scholarship journey.

Finally, Nuffield Ireland announced it will be hosting the Nuffield International Triennial in May 2026, jointly with Nuffield Northern Ireland. Every three years, the event attracts upwards of 250 Nuffield alumni from all over the world for eight to ten days of alumni-only farm and agribusiness visits, including one day of major global agrifood conferencing open to all stakeholders. A short outline of the programme was presented by organising committee Co-Chair 2022 Scholar Aoife Feeney. This is a major undertaking for Nuffield Ireland. We have recruited an event organising company to support us, from securing accommodation, venues and transport to developing sponsorship packages to part-fund the event. With them, we have developed branding and visuals, a website and a promotional video, and have been promoting the event at Nuffield conferences around the world.

The event was opened by Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Pippa Hackett.

Friday 10th November 2023
9.15h to 16.45h, followed by banquet at 19.00h
Mount Wolseley Hotel, Tullow, Co. Carlow

Our 2022 Scholars Pat Collins, David Dolan, Aoife Feeney and Lance Woods delivered their reports after completion of their two-year research and travel programmes.

Attendees heard updates from our 2023 Scholars Bryan Daniels, Margaret Edgill, David Fennelly, Tommy Murray, Liagh Whelehan and Gillian Willis.

We met for the first time our four newly recruited 2024 Scholars.

We welcomed our keynote speaker Amy Jackson, Nuffield UK 2012 Scholar and Director of Oxtale, Issues and Crisis Management Consultant. Amy is a researcher in public attitudes towards farming and challenged us on the theme of Finding Common Ground.

Early this year, we sadly and prematurely lost our pioneering Scholar Padraig Walshe who died suddenly in February. We paid tribute to Padraig and his legacy, with the first Padraig Walshe Award for best returning Nuffield Ireland Scholar presentation. The first scholar to be awarded this prestigious award was Lance Woods. Padraig’s powerful legacy of agricultural leadership was the topic of a fireside chat involving two of his friends Matt Ryan and Matt O’Keeffe.

After the Conference, we hosted our annual Nuffield banquet, where Scholars and Alumni networked with Investor represetatives and other agri-food stakeholders.

Scholars focus on sustainable farming projects, while panel challenges greenwashing in agriculture.

The 2022 annual Nuffield Ireland Conference took place on Friday 18th November, 2022 at the Castleknock Hotel, Dublin.

2021 Scholars Ray Ó Foghlú, Alex Eivers, Brendan Crosse and Brian McCarthy reported on topics strongly focused on the potential and sustainability of their sectors. They enthused and engaged our Conference audience with their somewhat niche, but important agricultural topics.

Attendees also heard updates from our 2020 Scholars Robbie Byrne, Gareth Lamberton, Linda O’Neill and Bruce Thompson; our 2022 Scholars Pat Collins, David Dolan, Aoife Feeney and Lance Woods and met for the first time our six newly recruited 2023 Scholars Bryan Daniels, Margaret Edgill, David Fennelly, Thomas Murray, Liagh Whelehan and Gillian Willis.

Read more about Nuffield Ireland Scholars – click here

Attendees also heard from a challenging panel discussion theme “Moving way beyond green washing: developing solutions for a ‘net positive’ agriculture” where farmers, agricultural ecology experts and environmentalists focus together on developing solutions for a ‘net positive’ agriculture.

After the Conference, attendees enjoyed our banquet and networked with some of our 114 Alumni, our Investor representatives and other agri-food stakeholders.

Speaking about the series, Karen Brosnan, Chair of Nuffield Ireland said, “ We were disappointed to have to cancel this year’s Nuffield Conference but we are delighted to be able to offer our returning 2019 scholars a platform to share their learnings with the industry. Understanding that people are experiencing a level of online fatigue, this format allows delegates to tune in for just 10 minutes each day at lunchtime over the course of the week and garner some invaluable insights on a wide range of topics pertinent to the agri-food industry”

The returning scholars and their topics include:

Ailish Moriarty – ‘Assess the role of milk screening for disease with the development of an effective herd health system’ . From a farming background in West Limerick, Ailish is Milk Quality Manager for Kerry Agribusiness and lives on a farm with her family in Annascaul, Co. Kerry.

Each group works closely to develop their understanding of the big issues facing agriculture, business, consumers and policy, as well as building their own leadership capacity and personal growth. This strong network of scholars across the globe provide a source of inspiration, information and debate on the important issues facing the sector currently and into the future.
